A PICT resource is basically the same thing as a PICT file except it is stored in the form of a resource rather than that of a file. See the help on PICT Files for a full description of PICTs. What follows will only cover the differences between the resource format and the file format.
~SB~Opening PICT Resources:~SB~
When opening PICT resources you will be presented with a list of files that have resource forks. This includes system files, applications, and some types of documents. Files that are currently in use will not be shown. Files like this will include the system and the application currently being used. After selecting a file to open you will be presented with a list of all the PICT resources contained within that file. Simply select the PICT you want and open it.
~SB~Saving PICT Files:~SB~
Saving PICT resources is a little different from saving files. The first thing you will do is enter the name of the file to place the resource in. If the file does ~SU~not~SU~ exist a new file will be created, however, if the file already exists it will simply be opened allowing you to place the resource inside of it. ~SU~You will not be asked to replace the file like you are when saving other files!~SU~ If the replace existing file message appears, stop! You must have selected the wrong format to same the image in.
After clicking on the save button you will then be asked for the resource attributes that go along with this resource. If you are interested in creating a start up screen for you Macintosh II be sure to give the PICT an ID of zero. The name you give the PICT resource in this case is not important.
╥StartUpScreen╙s are displayed using the standard system color environment. To see if an image will look good as a start up screen you could load the image in using the ~SU~Standard System~SU~ clut and see what it looks like first.
